XNA, my Macbook and Bootcamp

So, I use my Macbook for a bit of Windows development, using VirtualBox to simulate a PC. Since I have an Intel based Mac with a core2duo CPU this doesn’t cause too much of a performance hit. It works well for creating applications, but is no good for games.

My PC lives upstairs in my office with two monitors and a real keyboard, and is quite good for writing games on, using the Microsoft XNA Game Studio. I’ve not yet written any games, but that’s beside the point. Knives are good for stabbing with, but I’ve not done that either.

I’ve decided that I could use Bootcamp to install Windows XP on my Mac properly and then it’ll work for both regular application development and also for XNA Game Studio stuff. My only fear is that I might end up always booting Windows and have what is effectively a very expensive PC laptop. I used to run Linux on my PC… and now I just run Windows. Then again I think you need to specifically tell the Mac to even ask what OS to boot, so half the time I won’t bother. I’ve got enough HDD space too, and it might make SQL Server run a bit better, having that, the application and Visual Studio all running under a virtual XP with 1GB of ram is pushing things a bit.

About James

I'm just a person who likes writing software in their spare time. I'm not an "indie games developer" and am not trying to escape my day job and live in the happy world of games dev. I'm more like one of those people that used to write games in their spare time in the 80s. My stuff would be PD or Shareware if this were the 80s or 90s. It's good to comment on the posts in here :)
